A Hornbook was an aid that assisted children with their learning and was created as far back as 1450.   It is quite unusual so we have included a picture below.  In essence it would set out the letters of the alphabet, in lower and upper case, together with the contents of the Lord’s prayer; two of the most vital pieces of information it was considered a child should learn.  It would be mounted on wood, bone, leather or stone.
