words

So welcome back and Happy New Year to you all…..

After a little festive break we thought we would try and find something a little more unusual for our word of the week….

LOGODAEDALUS

A person who uses words with skill or cunning……or so they say.  Apparently the word is archaic now having not been used since 1664 and first documented as being used by Ben Jonson in Coryat’s Crudities in 1611.   Interestingly, it was also the pseudonym of the British setter Donald Putnam, who created extremely difficult crossword puzzles.

Logodaedalist however, is reported to be a more recent version of the word, with Nathaniel Bailey defining it in his 1727 dictionary as ‘a forger of new words’.  I can think of a word or two I created when I was young………can you?
